Frequently Asked Questions
A collection of common questions about the film.
Why episodic and not a singular film?
Jamiya: “I think it’s difficult to distill someone’s life into a 2-hour window when you’re trying to capture the bulk of their life and not a single moment like a sporting event or the time someone won an award. I think Sera’s story is rich in emotion, challenges, and dramatic moments so there’s a lot to reflect on in her past. But in the present she’s this fascinating woman who’s come out the other side of a very life-altering industry. She’s lived to tell the tale, so I think she deserves to take her time to tell her story.”
Do I need to be a KPop fan in order to enjoy it?
No, you actually don’t. Though we’ll be covering Sera’s time as an idol, there’s plenty of relatable story throughout even if you’re not a fan of KPop or are unfamiliar with the genre. We think the film is a very human story about the struggles and beauty of life. It’s fun, it’s emotional, it’s dramatic, and it’s peaceful, so there’s a little something for everyone.
Will 9Muses be in this documentary?
Unfortunately 9Muses will not be making an appearance in this film. We contacted them but didn’t hear back. We felt it would have been great to feature them in the film to discuss their time in the group, but maybe in the future! Never say never!
Is this the first documentary for you both?
For Jamiya yes. It’s his first documentary, serious film really. He’s quite nervous. For Sera no. She was featured in the documentary, The Nine Muses of Star Empire prior to her a debut as an idol. It’s quite emotional, but worth a watch!
What are some of the themes covered in the film?
There are a variety of themes throughout the film including loss, regret, family, faith, friendship, adventure, identity, innocence, resilience, community, and happiness amongst many others.
What language will the film be in?
Sera will be speaking mostly English, but Korean will be spoken by her and many of our interviewees frequently throughout the film. Subtitles will be provided.
Where does filming take place?
Jamiya: “Sera’s based in Seoul, so most filming will take place in South Korea. However, going along with the theme of rediscovery, I want to take her out of her usual setting to various places that are either unfamiliar or connected to her creative influences in some interesting way. As an artist I understand how impactful being exposed to new places, sights, and sounds can be, so it’s my hope by doing so, it will inspire Sera to not only create but give her fresh perspective on her life and what’s next for her.”
Is this a large production?
Jamiya: “It’s actually a small production with myself and Sera covering most of the production. However, we’ve been assisted by a wide variety of people to help make the film. The decision to keep the crew small was not only considering budget, but also the tone of the film. I want the film to have a much more personal feel like you’re watching memories or home movies. I think a big crew would change the atmosphere making it feel more like this big production instead of a quiet conversation.”
Who’s funding the project?
The film is primarily self-funded by the director, Jamiya Wilson, Ryu Sera, and a team of passionate fans and supporters. We value maintaining a consistent vision and creative control of the project in order to tell Sera’s story in the most authentic way possible. However, we do plan to crowdfund future goals for the project via donations and online crowdfunding platforms.
How much are you trying to raise for the film?
We’ve set a goal of $25,000 as our fundraising goal for the film. This will go towards production to complete any remaining episodes plus post production and other key areas that will enhance the presentation and final delivery of the project. We also have some stretch goals if we manage to exceed our primary funding goal. We’d love to produce a soundtrack for the film as well as raise funding to have Sera perform some of her music live for fans.
What is teamsera?
Jamiya: “teamsera is something I created at the onset of the project. I want it to be a community of passionate fans and supporters who want to back a positive cause and an artist they believe in. In this case, Sera. TeamSera isn’t about monetary contribution, it’s really about showing your love for our project, Sera and her music, and letting us know you’re in our tribe. Whether it be liking content on social media, telling your friends about it, or giving the film a watch when it releases. I want people to feel like they’re with us on this journey in making something we hope is positive and impactful in the world. Let’s go teamsera!”
Will this be on Netflix? Where can I watch it?
At this time we’re not sure. The project is still in production with a tenative wrap date of December 2026. We’re aiming for an early 2027 release and will be pitching to various platforms as more episodes are completed. Depending on their timeframe for a release, the “actual” release date may be months outside of our projected window. All that so say, we’d like to release the film in the winter of 2027. Something cozy to watch during the cold months! When it launches we’ll let you know what platform you can watch it on.
If someone wanted to donate to the project, how could they do so?
If you’d like to support the project, you can do so via the Donations Page. There you’ll be able to select the monetary amount you’d like to contribute to the film. We appreciate every contribution and thank you for your support!
